If you lay out the reclaimed boards on a large surface previous to laying the floor many patterns can be assessed before nailing them to the battens. Asurface\the floor sanders did this on arrival at our Brighton property.  As a result my husband and I decided on a contemporary finish rather than a mainstream varnish which we would otherwise have chosen.
